Ten years ago this month I went to Oxford as a callow fresher. Oxford is about college spirit, or something, but I found a welcome in the Invariant Society - mathematicians so keen on lectures they arrange their own for Tuesday nights. Notices on London buses remind you 'Please offer your seat to those less able to stand'. Plenty of passengers are incapable in the small hours. Those on the N1 were well-behaved despite being crowding beyond the displayed tolerances; the driver, though, was fraying. It was like travelling on the Knight Bus from Harry Potter. Steampunk goes electric
An unexpected combination of my twinterests, seen on a T-shirt in Bristol: Eastfield urban rail punk, set correctly in the Rail Alphabet.
The destination on the front of the Sex Pistols' tour bus was 'NOWHERE'. Eastfield sing 'This is the last tram to nowhere depot bound'. Listen: 'The Black Hole'; 'Fare Dodging'. -
Transport for London
The entries are in for venta's photo competition: up to eight shots on the theme 'transport' under various constraints. You can judge the submissions for yourselves, but three of my pictures deserve explanation.
